Dec 1: The final test a WebCT quiz, will be open to take anytime between Monday Dec 5th, 2005 (8:00 am) and Wednesday Dec 7th, 2005 (11:55 pm).

Nov 30, 2005:  Class evaluations to be done on Thursday Dec 1, to include a special student evalution form here.  It is very important that everyone fill in this evaluation form and return to their local faculty contact to mail back to the course evaluator.

Nov 17, 2005: WebCT Quiz 2: Anytime between 12 noon Tuesday Nov 15, 2005 and
11:55 pm Wednesday Nov 23, 2005. (Due date put back one day because it said Wednesday originally instead of Tuesday.)

For those that did not have the opportunity to present their slide on Thursday Nov 17, 2005, the only other opportunity will be the last day.  If I received your slide, I will count it as presented on Thursday 17, 2005.

Nov 15, 2005 Assignment 5:  The URL of the Grid service on page 1 is incorrect. The URL on page 4 is the correct URL.

Nov 14, 2005 Assignment 5 Note:One should not have the GLOBUS_LOCATION variable set when running GridNexus on a machine that has Globus installed. Unset GLOBUS_LOCATION prior to starting GridNexus. The GridNexus script will try to use the jar files in the Globus installation if it exists. Apparently, there is a jar file that is in conflict with the jars in GridNexus installation. By unsetting that variable, the GridNexus script will set the CLASSPATH to only include the jars that come with GridNexus.

Nov 10, 2005 Assignment 6: As discussed in class, submit the topic for your slide to me by email (abw@uncc.edu) by next Tuesday, Nov 15th, 2005, for confirmation your topic has not be already selected by someone else.

Nov 7th, 2005:  For the last few weeks of class, I will attempt to record attendance.  During this period, we will have outside presentations and class discussions.  Hence, it is extremely important that everyone attends for the outside presentators and to participate in class discussions. I have more or less finished all my materials and would like to get the class to talk about grid computing.

A new policy: Anyone who is does not attend class is risking loosing 2% of their final grade for each day they miss without an excuse.
To repeat: 2% may be taken off your final grade for each class day missed i.e. if you had 85%, and missed two days, it might become 81%.

Oct 26, 2006 Assignment 4: At some sites (UNC-C, UNC-A, and UNC-W), Step IX does not produce the required output (some problem with globus/SGE).  Follow the instructions described here as a work around.

Oct 25, 2005: Assignment 4 For those students using WCU's cluster: In your home directory, there is a file called READ_ME_FIRST that contains the passphrase for your proxy. General: To use cygwin with X11 graphics (e.g. qmon GUI), first execute the command (script): startxwin.bat at a cygwin prompt.

August 30, 2005:  The primary teaching assistant for this course is Nalin Subramanian nvsubram@uncc.edu
Please contact him on issues such as UNC-C accounts.

August 29, 2005: Accounts on WebCT have been set-up:  http://www.webct.uncc.edu/WCT_FACULTY/index.html
(Choose "development server.") Please check that you can access your account. Username and passwords are being sent individually and are not as described previously in the slides. Advise me within 48 hours if your account does not work. Change password immediately. For a tutorial on submitting assignments to WebCT see http://www.webct.uncc.edu/WCT_STUDENT/assignments.html

Class schedule. Each university has its own class schedule. The class will start on Tuesday August 23rd, 2005 (UNC-C's start date). The last class presentation will be on Thursday December 1st, 2005, which is earlier than the normal date at some sites including UNC-C but is done to accommodate at least three sites with earlier last days. There will be no class presentation on Tuesday October 11th, 2005 (UNC-C Fall break), or Thursday November 24th, 2005 (Thanksgiving ). It will be necessary for students at sites with breaks that do not coincide with UNC-C's breaks to watch recordings of classes later.  Final exams will be scheduled according to the local schedule.

Oct 14, 2005,  WCU server, where the assignment write-ups are held, is down.  So I have extended the deadline for submitting assignment 3 to next Tuesday Oct. 18, 2005.

Oct 12, 2005:  There were several mistakes in the questions and answers in Quiz 1.  The grading has been altered accordingly but not to reduce anyone's grade.  In all cases, the grades have actually gone up.  Please recheck your grade if you have already taken the quiz.

Oct 5, 2005  The expectation is that graduate students will do more work. Hence, I have added an impossible extra part to assignment 3 for graduate students and others who are short of something to do between classes.  Described in slidesA3 below.

Oct 3, 2005:  Assignment 3 set.  WebCT quiz 1 posted, to be done anytime between Tuesday 11:55 pm Oct 4 and Wednesday 11:55 pm Oct 12, 2005. Topics includes lecture materials up and including Globus job submission and assignments 1, 2, and 3.

No class on Oct 11, 2005 (UNC-C Fall break)

Sept 14, 2005:  Apparently, the whole uncc.edu domain was down about the time that  assignment 1 was due to be submitted to WebCT.  Hence, the due date for assignment 1 has been put back to Thursday Sept. 15, 2005.
Assignment 2 released/posted.

Sept 5, 2005: Because of the continual problems with cs.uncc.edu, I have copied the course materials  to
http://coit-grid01.uncc.edu/abw/index.html to be used as a backup. It may not be completely up-to-date.

August 31, 2005 Assignment 1 posted. All students should have WebCT and computer accounts. Please advise TA if you do not.
